16 June 2017 – From the 3rd of June until 24th September a selection of letters by Mondrian to his lover Willy Wentholt are displayed in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag as part of the exhibition The Discovery of Mondrian. Amsterdam, Paris, London, New York.
In 2017 the Netherlands celebrates the centenary of the magazine De Stijl. Exhibitions are being held throughout the entire country which showcase the movement and its most important players. The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag put together an exhibition in honour of this special occasion which displays almost all 300 Mondrian works from its own collection. For the exhibition entitled The Discovery of Mondrian. Amsterdam, Paris, London, New York objects are displayed in a number of cabinets which offer a glimpse into Mondrian’s personal story. As part of this exhibition, the Mondrian Edition Project presents eleven of the twenty-one letters by Mondrian to his girlfriend Willy Wentholt.
The letters tell their love story whilst simultaneously touching many other subjects which shed light on the personal life and artistic development of Mondrian.
