The exhibition Mondrian & De Stijl in Madrid’s Reina Sofía museum has been postponed. It was originally due to open to the public on 13 May, but this has not been possible because of the COVID-19 crisis. The exhibition has been delayed for an indeterminate period. It is hoped that it can go ahead in the autumn of 2020.
The exhibiton has been organised in collaboration with the Kunstmuseum in The Hague, and it focuses on Mondrian’s development from landscape painter to pioneer of abstract art. His work is compared and contrasted with that of his contemporaries. Another feature is to look at the manner in which Mondrian presented his work in exhibitions. In making a selection he was very careful, for example, to emphasise the development in his work. In this way the public could understand how he differed from his contemporaries as well as seeing the qualities that distinguish his work.
The exhibition includes various loans from the collection of the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, including letters, photographs and books by Mondrian and artists from his artistic circle. As soon as a new date is known for the exhibition, which is curated by Hans Janssen (Curator of modern art at the Kunstmuseum, The Hague), there will be an announcement on our website.
