Not long ago it was announced on this website that the Mondrian and De Stijl exhibition in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid had been postponed. The exhibition was originally due to open in May 2020, but it was then delayed because of the Corona pandemic. In the meantime a new date has been set for the exhibition, that will now open on 11 November. It is the first substantial overview of the Dutch art movement to be presented in Spain.
The RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History has been responsible for the documentary side of the exhibition, as the lender of dozens of photographs, letters and publications by and about Mondrian and his artistic comrades in arms. This allows the sketching of a broad outline of the rise of the modern movement in the Dutch art world and of Mondrian’s development and international breakthrough. National and international loans permit the bringing together of works which have never previously been seen together in this context.
The exhibition Mondrian and De Stijl will be on show from 11 November 2020 until 1 March 2021.
